Ms. Xu ignored her. “If you come at 12 o’clock, the aunties will give you less food,” Ms. Xu said, speaking softly. Ms. Xu is familiar with the rhythms of the Tongxinhui Community Canteen because she eats there every day to save money. “Only when you save money will you feel safe,” she said. A devastating crash in the value of real estate, where most household wealth is tied up, has heightened a feeling among young working professionals like Ms. Xu that their situation is precarious, too.

Fu Bao fandomBorn to parents Ai Bao and Le Bao in July 2020 as part of China’s “panda diplomacy” program, Fu Bao is South Korea’s first naturally-bred panda. Some South Koreans said Fu Bao provided them with moments of joy during the pandemic. In one video, Fu Bao clings tightly to Kang’s leg, unwilling to let go, as he spins gently around the room. The other short video shows Fu Bao clinging to Kang’s arm while relaxing on a wooden bench. Once Fu Bao departs for China, there will be four giant pandas left at Everland – Fu Bao’s mother Ai Bao, father Le Bao, and their twin babies Rui Bao and Hui Bao, who were born last July.

DINKs are proudly emerging as an aspirational class for young people — and they're ready to live it up. So when she set up her dating profile, Johnson included in her bio that she didn't want to have kids of her own. Amy Blackstone, the author of the 2019 book " Childfree by Choice ," said that the financial gap between DINKs and couples with kids wasn't solely because of the choice about children. DINKs, GINKs, " rich aunties ," and DINKWADs — DINKs with a dog — have become aspirational identities for younger generations. There are the DINKs who can seize the American dream and the parents who are struggling to stay afloat in a country without guaranteed paid leave or affordable childcare .

AdvertisementThe 20-year age gap between my oldest and youngest kids gives me the unique perspective of being both a young and old parent. Being a young parent felt coolIn my late 20's, revealing I had a 10-year-old became almost a novelty. By this time, I was regularly scouring the Yellow Pages and cold-calling businesses to ask if they were hiring because being a young parent meant being resourceful and constantly hustling. AdvertisementI had more stability as an older momAs an old parent, I have stability and a healthy marriage. Being a young and old parent means my two grandbabies will benefit from having cool, young aunties.

Two Australians, Jess and Daniel Baldock, bought a plot on the Indonesian island of Sumba. AdvertisementAdvertisementIn April 2018, Jess and Daniel Baldock flew from their native Australia to the Indonesian island of Sumba — and never left. He encouraged Jess Baldock to buy a plot of land, sight unseen, in the beachside village of Kerewe, which is surrounded by mangroves and waterfalls. "The only time we left the site was on everyone's lunch break or after work," Jess Baldock said. Some walls were built, knocked down, and rebuilt until workers reached the standard that Daniel Baldock knew they needed to achieve.

Rachel Bell is a physical therapist who started pet sitting on Rover, a pet-care platform, in 2021. Bell and her wife board pets in their home and fulfill the duties around their work schedules. Pet sitting has been an eye-opener for me. I'd follow up with customers asking for reviewsAfter I did pet sitting for the first few customers, I followed up, asking them whether they could leave a review. I'd work about 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the hospital and then check on the pets at home afterward.

Victoria’s state government called time on Melbourne’s Australia Day parade after two years of Covid cancellations, and Kmart, a normal go-to for party supplies, announced it wouldn’t be stocking traditional Australia Day merchandise – clothing, plates, napkins and other memorabilia draped in the Australian flag. Cooper is among a growing band of Indigenous allies who now refer to Australia Day as Invasion Day or Survival Day, after learning more about the nation’s history from those who suffered. Every year, Australia Day – or Invasion Day – forces a difficult conversation about those left behind, and what role everyone can play in finding a way forward. And it really is for many.”The Australia Day Live 2023 concert at Sydney Opera House on January 26, 2023. In the far western Queensland town of Boulia, Beck Britton had been worried that her attempts to throw an Australia Day party could fall flat.

As a woman in South Asian culture, I was taught that I wasn't supposed to be good with money. In fact, I can recall several conversations with aunties in our community advocating that we younger South Asian girls just "marry a rich Indian boy, from a good family." When it comes to South Asian women's relationship with money and their ability to attain financial agency, it's important to understand cultural context. "It became standard to try and pick up the bill, even when I knew I couldn't afford to, because this was something I'd seen up front and center in South Asian culture. Cultural expectations and narratives play a huge role in our ability as South Asian women to make different decisions, especially when it comes to our money and building wealth.
“We’re also meeting people at their doors.”When it came to appealing to South Asian voters in Georgia, Nabilah Islam said her “secret weapon” had been under her nose for years. During her recent campaign for state Senate, the 33-year-old Bangladeshi American brought conversations about issues to aunties and uncles on their home turf: WhatsApp. She's now the first South Asian ever elected to the Georgia state Senate. A bloc starting to gain more recognitionAccording to Karthick Ramakrishnan, co-director of AAPI Data, the concerted efforts to appeal to Asian voters in Georgia are reflected in nationwide politics. Steps like these prove grassroots efforts to appeal to AAPI voters work, Makhija said.
The hip-hop community calls for change, but there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight to the violence. So I think hip-hop is the scapegoat for a lot of things.”Greg Yuna and Lenny Santiago. Some of those murders are now being explored in a new WE tv’s docuseries “Hip Hop Homicides,” which looks at the shooting deaths of rap artists including Pop Smoke, XXXTentacion and King Von. In some cases, money exacerbates some of these things.”Although Lathan believes there should be more accountability in hip-hop from those who create the violence, rap artists can’t always be blamed for the violence that surrounds them or happens to them. Caz said that in those days hip-hop music was used as a form of escape.
She said that she did not see herself reflected on other dance teams on campus. The history of majorette-style dance teamsStarting in the 1960s, majorette dance teams became popular at HBCUs for their high energy movements that infuse jazz, West African and hip-hop dance styles. The majorette dance teams often perform alongside a marching band in glittery outfits while doing flips in the air or showcasing other gymnast moves. Those performances, usually held at HBCU football games and homecoming events, were an opportunity for majorette dance teams to show off their skill and even battle with rival schools. Another coach for the team, Princess Alintah, agreed, saying groups like the USC Cardinal Divas show that majorette dance teams are not monolithic.
